Moong Dal


1 onion, chopped

2 tomatoes, pureed

¾ cup moong dal

2 ½ cup water

½ tsp turmeric powder

2 tsp salt, or to taste

2 tbsp oil

1 tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp mustard seeds


  1. To pressure cooker, add onions, tomatoes, dal, water, turmeric powder, and salt

  2. Give a good stir. Cover and cook over medium until you hear two whistles. Approximately 15-20 minutes

  3. Turn heat off and allow pressure to release on its own

  4. While dal is cooling, heat oil in small pan. Once oil is hot, add cumin and mustard seeds. They should crackle as soon as you put them in. Leave on heat only for about 10 seconds and immediately pour into dal

  5. Check consistently of dal. Add water if you’d like it thinner
